What is the reason for dental problems?

Dental problems are common. Every one has to visit dentist at some point of his life.
We should adapt healthy habits in early stage of our life. Prevention is better than cure.

  1. If you are not brushing your teeth twice a day
  2. Using hard brush and brushing your teeth vigorously ( Prefer ultra soft Brush)
  3. Not using mouth wash twice a day after brushing
  4. Eating Junk foods
  5. Eating too much sweets
  6. Avoiding Dentist - Remember, even after brushing regularly, dental problem may occur. One should visit dentist atleast twice a year just as safety measure.

How painful is a root canal?

I would like to share my personal experience
Before starting the root canal procedure , Dentist spray some liquid around your gum to make it numb so that when he start injecting local anesthesia around your infected tooth, you will not feel prick of needle. That is true to some extent. You will not feel needle penetrating your gum because of numb surface but after penetrating numb surface you will definitely feel some pain. That pain will be tolerable.
After injecting local anesthesia, Dentist will leave you alone for 5–10 minutes. In that period, the part of your mouth where he injected anesthesia will become numb. Then he will start drilling your teeth and if you feel any sensitivity while drilling, it means you need more local anesthesia. He will give you some more doses of anesthesia. When he drill enough to reach those infected roots, he will stop drilling and pull those roots by his dental instruments. I hadn’t felt any pain during that procedure. You may felt some mild pricking pain after root canal treatment is done.
According to my experience, I think the only time i felt pain is when dentist gave me local anesthesia by injection. Other procedure were painless

Why are root canals performed?

I will explain you with some Images. As you can see in above image, nerves are secured in pulp chamber. If your tooth develop cavity and u don’t take care of it in early stage, gradually that cavity will penetrate Enamel and Dentin. When that cavity reaches to your pulp chamber, it will infect your nerves. Look at the image below.

Once your nerves got infected, you will start feeling pain. Infection will reach to your bone through root canal and abscess will be formed there. If you neglect your tooth even after that, The abscess will destroy your bone around the teeth. Your tooth will become unstable due to lack of support from your bone and ultimately , Dentist will have to perform Apicoectomy on your tooth to save it. Look at the image below.

Now, Thats Scary :(
But if you dont want Apicoectomy, You need to take care of your tooth at early stage when your nerves gets infected and less bone is destroyed by abscess. At that stage, Dentist will remove your nerves from tooth to avoid further consequences and fill your root canal with sealing material. This will save your tooth.

What's the best way to take care of someone recovering from wisdom tooth surgery?

When you undergo any  dental surgery, Dentist usually handover checklist to us. It is mentioned in checklist what to do and what not to do after surgery. It is necessary to take precaution after surgery to avoid bleeding and infection.
  1. Don’t try to remove cotton ball after surgery to see how bad it looks, Otherwise u will start bleeding moderately. Don’t try to touch the operation site until your stitches have been removed
  2. Eat Ice cream after surgery
  3. Use ice pack for first 24–48 hrs. Remember Swelling will increase on second day after operation. Thereafter it will reduce gradually. After one week there should be no swelling. If it is there then there is some problem.
  4. Restrict your physical activity after operation to avoid bleeding.
  5. Brush carefully. Don’t touch operated site.
  6. Eat soft
  7. Don’t Floss immidiately after surgery
  8. Take medicine time to time
  9. My dentist told me to floss gently with Luke warm salt water 4 days after surgery to keep operated area clean and hygienic ( ask your dentist before you do that).
  10. After your stitches removed, use dentist recommended mild mouthwash and ultra soft tooth brush to avoid irritation.
